One flew over the cuckoo’s nest

Motion Design / Illustration

This reimagined title sequence for One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest (1975) is designed to capture the film’s themes without using stills or clips. Inspired by a local psychiatric hospital, I photographed its architecture, stone walls and windows to evoke the film’s oppressive atmosphere. Drawing from the illustrative styles of Catch Me If You Can and The Queen’s Gambit, I developed a bold, graphic approach to reflect its psychological intensity. The sequence integrates textured backgrounds with symbolic elements—a deck of cards for manipulation, a record player for nostalgia and pills for mental health themes—creating a visually compelling introduction that immerses viewers in the film’s unsettling world.

This brand identity was undertaken as a project at Limerick School of Art and Design.
